We've had a cooler spring this year and it is finally turning hot, just in time for the Fourth of July. Fingers crossed for the monsoon season to show up with the new month - we can use the daily rain.
One thing we can count on for sure in July is the Rufous hummingbird. These are bright orange hummingbirds with glowing orange throats on the males. Their personality is very feisty and they chase all the other birds away from the feeders, and sit guard in a nearby tree to make sure nobody gets to eat. Fortunately they are only here for the month of July because it is a nervous time for all, and we only have one or two at a time. The females and young look like our other hummingbirds, so we have a hard time figuring out how many there are of them.

Most of our hummingbirds are Broadtail - green backs and the males have ruby red throats. These males are also territorial, but not as bad as the rufous.
We bought these new high-capacity feeders this year, and are so happy with them. Not only are we not having to fill them all the time, but more birds can eat at a time.

I love humming birds!!! Great shots of them Ms Troutbend!!!
I have a "firecracker" plant out front that brings them late into the fall at times!! With California literally ON FIRE, we have had very little activity!!
The deer and small creatures are being driven up the canyons onto main roads by the herds!!! It is INSANE!! I have never seen a fire season like this, it is literally amazing the acres in Calif. that are on fire and already burned!!
I'm house sitting in Chico for the week, so I am hoping it isn't too bad down in the valley.....but it is smokey!!
